Thanks Taj; this was indeed helpful. You might want to mention the bit that the command "net start oracleserviceorcl1" can also be performed by accessing computer management in the windows control panel. I noticed that my service name was actually "oracleserviceorcl" and not "oracleserviceorcl"

I had been struggling with accessing em since last night& only managed 2 sort things out 2day. I actually noticed that perhaps the problem I was experiencing was also to do with the fact that my listener was not started.

The mechanics of the Oracle Management Framework require that all components of the Framework be explicitly started before any service of the component can be used.... I think thats the bit I was missing.
